TROUBLESHOOTING

You can open the game by running StartGame.exe.
If for some reason this doesn't work, you can start the game directly by running GAME.exe in the Data folkder.

The game uses palette-changing to great effect: most areas are monotone until you transfer into color mode, and even then they aren't full-color.
Palette effects are also used to simulate alpha fading, make the screen fade red when B.D. gets a headache, highlight the red on her dress, and so on.
These effects are normally not well-supported by modern computers, so DDrawCompat (the included ddraw.dll) has been included to aid with compatibility. (https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat)
Playing in full-screen is highly recommended, as even with DDrawCompat, the effects don't seem to work in windowed mode.

If the game gets stuck on a black screen when launching, DDrawCompat might be causing an issue; you can try deleting or renaming ddraw.dll in the Data folder to "remove" it.
Without DDrawCompat, the graphics might always display in full-color, or with off colors. The game will still be playable this way, but it's very different from how it's intended to look.
*** Given the era of the game, emulating Windows 98 (such as with Microsoft Virtual PC) is likely to produce the best results. ***
